In this lesson, Binswanger examines in detail the process by which we form higher-level concepts. He compares the intrinsic view of abstraction as subtraction to the Objectivist view that abstraction is interrelation. He discusses what concepts do and expands upon the idea of concepts as “file folders.” Finally, he shows how higher-level concepts are formed by changing the scale of our reference or by cross-classification.
