Ayn Rand held that the concept of individual rights is so novel that most people have not grasped it fully to this day. In this first lesson, Dr. Salmieri and Dr. Ghate analyze Rand’s essay “Man’s Rights” and its treatment of individual rights. Among the topics covered are the subordination of society to moral law, the basis and nature of rights, pseudo-rights, and a comparison of Rand’s theory of rights with other theories, such as divine rights, natural rights, and socially granted rights.
